What stays on your device
Your trips are saved in your browser (local storage). Roadlegs does not read them unless you sign in to sync them (see below). Back them up to a file from the My trips window if you want to keep them safe or move them to another device. Clearing site data in your browser removes them.
What is stored on our server
Trips you choose to share live, and your account if you sign in. A shared trip is kept on the Roadlegs server together with two secret links, one to plan together and one to watch. Anyone who has a link can open that trip, so share links only with people you trust. You can make new links, which stops the old ones, or stop sharing. Shared trips that nobody changes for 180 days are deleted. To keep the service from being abused, a short-lived, salted hash of your network address is used for request limits. It is not used for anything else. If you sign in, your email address and the trips you sync are kept on the server until you delete the account (Account in the My trips window, which also lets you download everything we hold). Signing in sets one session cookie.
Services your browser talks to
Planning needs other services, and your browser sends them what they need, which includes your network address. We choose them:
- Photon (Komoot), for searching places and naming points on the map.
- The public Valhalla routing service run by FOSSGIS, for routes.
- Overpass API, for fuel, camps, hotels and other places along a route; Wikidata, for how well known a sight is.
- Open-Meteo, for weather and elevation.
- OpenFreeMap and OpenStreetMap, for map tiles. Protomaps, only when you save a map for offline use.
Each has its own privacy policy. The coordinates of your stops are part of what they receive. Searches for places go through a Roadlegs cache first. It keeps the searched area and the answer for a week and does not store who asked.
Cookies and analytics
Roadlegs does not use advertising cookies. It uses Google Analytics to count visits, which sets cookies and sends Google your network address and the pages you open. The control panel for the site owner uses one sign-in cookie. Analytics starts only after you accept it in the cookie banner. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings in the footer.
